Simple quotes from The Bhagavad Gita that are lessons for life

bhagavad-gitaThese are some select quotes of the many lessons that Lord Krishna gave a very confused and disturbed Arjuna on the battlefield at Kurukshetra. Relevant even today, the Bhagavad Gita is a scripture that has the answers to all our problems, even five thousand years hence. I decided to do this list when I quoted one of the teachings to Showie during a conversation we were having. So here they are, some of the hard hitting, but simple truths that we must always remember.

Whatever happened, happened for the good. Whatever is happening, is happening for the good. Whatever will happen, will also happen for the good

Everything happens for a reason. There is a reason you’re going through a bad phase and there is a reason that you have a stroke of good luck. Accept the present, without fretting about the past or worrying about the future. It will all be good.

You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work

‘Karm karo, phal ki chinta mat karo’ is the wisest message the Bhagwad Gita gives us. You need to keep working diligently, without expecting anything in return. Whatever is due to you, will come to you.

Change is the law of the universe. You can be a millionaire, or a pauper in an instant

Nothing is permanent in our lives. Everything keeps changing and evolving. Accepting this grounds you in life.

The soul is neither born, and nor does it die

Fear and sorrow over death is futile. The soul does not die, just gets transferred into another being. It just the mortal body that we discard.

You came empty handed, and you will leave empty handed

We came into this world without anything and we we also go to our grave with nothing. Attachment to material things is but temporary and you should abandon it.

Hell has three gates: lust, anger, and greed

Kama, krodh and lobh will do us no good. Unreasonable addiction to any of these three can only bring sorrow.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is

You are what you think you are. Your thoughts make and define you. If you think you’re a happy person, you become happy. If you let sad thoughts take over your mind, you become a sad person.

The mind alone is one’s friend as well as one’s enemy

You are your own best friend. Only you yourself can find answers to your questions by looking within. Believe in yourself.
